Following passage of a measure by the state legislature in May 2021, sports betting is legally permitted in Nebraska. As part of a larger gambling expansion plan, lawmakers in Nebraska decided to incorporate retail sports betting. In November 2020, a ballot initiative with support from the general public urged lawmakers to increase the number of casino games available in the state.

However, sports betting in the state will have to wait as lawmakers and regulators figure out how to best set up the Nebraska “racino” regulatory and legal landscape.

At the state’s horse racing tracks, it may be required to construct permanent sports betting rooms before it’s possible to accept wagers – something the Nebraska Racing Commission and Gaming Commission is working on.
